You did not say when these migrations occurred, but my guess is that they were related to religious freedom. I have ancestors who were Catholic who moved from Westmoreland CO across the Potomac to MD, c 1650, then returned to VA, c 1790. If you check the history of MD and VA you will see how the pendulum of religious tolerance swung back and forth in this time period, depending upon who had control of the colony at any given time. MD had more religious freedom in its early days, then came under control of Cromwell's party and things changed. Meanwhile, the Church of England was the state church of VA until soon after the Rev War.
