According to teh atrwoods who have been working on genealogy many years before me, the name Atwood started with the spelling, Atte Wode, Atte Wood and Attwood with Attwood being used until the 1800's.

The first Atwood on record was William Attewode in England in 1203. The name was derived fromt the family living in or near the woods, thicket or grove of trees.

My family [Raymond Thomas Atwood] visited the old home of the Atwoods in England, which was known as "Sanderstead Manor", a large building with many rooms. It has its own Church, and about 15 small farms. It originally was made up of about 3000 acres and was in the Atwood family since 1346.

The property was located in Surrey County, the largest concentration of Atwoods being in Surrey and Sent Counties, just South of London.

Sanderstead Manor was owned by the Atwood until the last part of 1700's or the first part of the 1800's. Some members of the Atwood family dropped the Atte off the front of the name and took the name Wood.

Gilbert born 1651 England, died 1715 mother Jane ___. Father unknown. Wife unknown.
{ We know the mother was Jane Lancelott from above WILL. Jane Lancelott was born ca 1651. ]

Gilbert Atwood was born in Westmoreland Co VA somewhere near the dates above and probably married in this county to Ann Young as a young man. The firt records we have of him leaving Westmoreland Co, he showed up in Culpeper Co in 1768 at a settlement called Flint Hill, now in Rappahannock Co, that county being cut off from Westmoreland.
In 1796 it was called Warren Co.

Benjamin Allen came from Monocacy Valley in Maryland in 1734 to Shenandoah Valley, VA per Cecil O'Dell's 1995 book
" Pioneers of Old Frederick Co Virginia". There is much about them in this book. Nothing about Atwood's. Benjamin came with Riley Moore and William White. Your local reference librarian may be able to get this book on inter-library loan for you?
