I don't know if it is the same family, but another genealogist told me my James Butler (b. ca 1738, d. 1810 in Gallia Co., OH, was the son of Thomas Butler (b. 1720) and Eleanor Fleming Parker (b. 1720) of Westmoreland Co., VA. Perhaps your James Butler was a grandson of Thomas and Eleanor. If your James was born ca 1769, that would make his birth about right to be Thomas' grandson. I know nothing else about Thomas' family, but maybe your James was named after my James, who might have been his uncle.
The same genealogist told me that Thomas Butler was a descendant of the Butlers that were Dukes of Ormond in Ireland, but I have no proof for any of the above, as I am stuck on my James (b. ca 1738) who married Mary Ann/Nancy Anne Sims, and moved to Greenbrier Co., W. VA and then Gallia Co., OH.
If you think this might be your family, and I can't believe there were that many Butler families in Westmoreland Co., VA, in that period, contact me at: email@example.com.
Thanks, Pat Bristley
