My theory on the surname of Lydia Ann/Jane, wife of Wm. H. Howard, HH813, 1850c, WCV:
1. The notoriously inaccurate 1850c, WCV (for place of birth) lists Lydia, w/o Wm. H. Howard as b VA; however, the 1860c, WCV lists her as being b in MARYLAND.
2. In 1850c, WCV, Jacob Howard, s/o Wm. H. Howard & Lydia, age 16, waggonmaker is living in HH2041: WARREN, Walter, 50; Nancy (Hill), 48; Lucretia, 27; RACHEL, 22; Walter, 11... Next listing is: HH2042: WARREN, George, 27; Catharine V. (Catherine Virginia Davidson), 24; Selena; GROGAN, Allen, 21, Waggon Maker. Grogans were of Smyth Co VA or Smyth-WCV boundary area. 1880c, Dist 7 Pct 7, Ccolin Co TX, 247B: WARREN, George A., 58, VA/MD/TN; Sarah J. (Carothers - 2nd wife), 43, TN; Ltitia E., 16, TN; Sarah V., 12, TN; Alice R., 9, TN; Geo. A., 5, TN...
3. 1880c, WCV, North Fork, Wm. H. Warren is dwelling with his 2nd wife, Rebecca Foran; two HHs before him are: WARREN, Sarah, 60, VA/MD/SCOT; Nancy, 64, VA/MD/SCOT; Walater B., 52, VA/MD/SCOT - all single. These 3 Warrens and in addition, HH2010 (Bazil Warren) were children of George Warren and E. One of the children of Bazil Warren, Wm. Warren is in HH1983, age 40y with wife, Tricy (WHITE), and next listing are the parents of the 2nd wife of Wm. H. Howard, HH1984: FERRIN (Foran), Henry; Susannah, 50, et al.
1838 PPTL for Smyth lists only Elijah Warren who mar a Smallwood in that county in 1841.
Conclusion: I believe that Lydia, wife of Wm. Howard, b c1808/9 was likely a WARREN.
