Karen and all: Remember that Birth & Death records did not start in VA until at least 1853, and thru 1896 was totally voluntary (meaning the family had to register a birth or death unless the death was a slave that would influence tax records). It is believed that less than 1/3 births/death were recorded during that period. In 1896 the law lapsed and there were no vital records kept until the mandatory law of today was passed in 1914 and all records started being kept in Richmond. Births were not really shown in newspapers until c 1920, and deaths early on were not the type we know today, but just a short blurb (John Jones died yesterday at his farm in the county). The local paper has no archives back much before 1923. Hope this helps.
