Joshua Joyner

       The Joyners were French Juguenots. They went from France to
England and from England to America in the 1640's. The settled in
Sussex County, VA.
       Joshua Joyner migrated from VA to West TN in the early 1820's.
He settled in the south west part of Carroll County. He was the father
of Marshal, Jim, Newsom, Luther, and Joe Joyner. Marshall, Jim and Newsom
were all Baptist ministers. Joe, the youngest, was a farmer. He spent
all of his life in the area where they were born and reared, just over
the Carroll County line in Gibson County. He was the father of Arden,
Percy, and Onel Joyner.
       Luther was killed dring the Civil War. Jim moved to Jackson, TN
when he was a young man. Newsome moved to Huntingdon. He was the
father of Ed and Ben Joyner.
       After returning home from the Civil War, Marshal Joyner m. Lucy
Morris of Gibson County. They moved to the Concord Community of Carroll
County. He was the pastor of several churches in the area. He helped to
organize the First Baptist Church of Huntingdon. He was also a cotton
farmer. In 1890 he moved to Westport. He helped to organize the
Baptist Church there and served as the first pastor.
       Marshall Joyner was the father of Joe, John, Sarah, Jim, Newt,
Walter and Garvin Joyner. Joe, Newt, Walter and Garvin were all Baptist
ministers. Sarah m a Baptist minister. John and Jim farmed and Jim
also worked for the NC & St L railroad.
