Gloria, I,too,am researching info regarding free black Waldens in Surry. I ran across an item of great interest in the Courthouse 9/6/00 regarding 3 of my great uncles, Augustus Platt Walden, Luther and Charlie Walden where in Sept.1905 charlie petitioned the court to have race changed for the 3 brothers but it was not acted upon until March of 1926. My grandfather was Samuel Lee Walden, brother of the the aforementioned Waldens but he was not included in same action. The 3 brothers were listed as children of Joseph J. and Salona M. Walden and births recorded in Surry as Free Blacks
in 1869,1872,1874. I did not find any info needless to say on my grandfather and am digging to the depths of China if I have to to get my heritage straight. This document has answered a lot of questions that I have always had about the secretiveness of the Walden Clan on my side. I can't find Joseph or Salona in the the Surry Census for any year. could this be the Waldens you are hunting for. I am at a point that I just want to know the truth about my racial status, not that I care, but apparently they cared and went to all lengths to prevent the extended families to have this knowledge. If you can help me maybe some of what I have can help you. Please advise.
