John Tomlinson, Sr., b. by 1695, probably Charles City Co., VA; d. 19 Dec 1760-20 May 1762, Sussex Co., VA. (Sussex WB A, 238) He may have m.1 Elizabeth; he definitely m. by 1739 Mary Chappell, daughter of Thomas Chappell and Elizabeth Jones (who m.2 Thomas Taylor).

John's will named sons Burrell (Burwell), Thomas, John, James; daughters Rebecca Heath, Sarah Partridge, Mary (W)Renn, Anne; grandson John Tomlinson, son of Thomas; granddaughter Ann, daughter of Sarah Partridge; sons James, Burrell, executors; witnesses Joshua Rosser, John Gary, William Harrison. Other children died earlier: Henry, b. by 1723, d. 23 Feb 1748-15 Mar 1749, Amelia Co., VA, m. Jane; William, b. by 1725, d. 23 Nov-19 Dec 1759, Sussex, unm.; Benjamin d. 24 Apr-15 June 1759, Sussex, unm.; Elizabeth, b. 25 Nov 1739, Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA, godparents Jehu Barker, Elizabeth Daniel, Rebecca Heeth; apparently d. by 1760, since Elizabeth was not named in John's will.

John Jr.'s will named wife Susanna; sons William, Lucas, John, David, James, Nathan, Nathaniel; daughters Pharaby (Fereby), Mildred, Elizabeth Cook, Mary Collier, Sarah Anderson; executors sons Lucas and John Tomlinson; witnesses William Sykes, William Tomlinson, William Wrenn. Deeds link this family to Lancaster Co., SC. Births of two children were recorded in the Albemarle Parish Register: Lucas, 11 Apr 1746, godparents John Adkins, Jr., Christopher Tatum, Jr., Bathia Tatum; Fereby, 18 Oct 1767, godparents Frederick and Sally Andrews, Mary Tomlinson.
