Murray West is my ggg grandfather. His mother was Phoebe Bowler, who married Joseph Howdershelt (apparently the original spelling of the immigrant of that family was Haudenchild). Phoebe Bowler was the daughter of Charles Bowler (b. 1752 in Rhode Island) and Elizabeth Donahoe/Donahue/etc. Charles was son of Metcalf Bowler, a very, very prominent merchant and public figure who was evidently discovered to be a double agent for the British during the Revolution, according to the papers of Governor Clinton. I suppose his children split town because of this at some point, whenever it may have been discovered. One of Metcalf's sons, Major Fairchild Bowler, married in North Carolina to a Rebecca Bonner. Charles Bowler, Major's brother, of course, came to Caroline County and then Stafford County. Some had proposed that he may have been of the Boulware family of Caroline but I think children of Charles Bowler and Elizabeth Donahoe named their father as having been from Rhode Island. I will have to check.
As to the West family, your guess is as good as mine. George West died on March 17, 1856 in Stafford County. I have not looked up his will yet -- and do not even know if it is even extant, as some Yankee burned a lot of the records.
