Try this website I just came across..
http://www.city-data.com/county/Stafford_County-VA.html. You can click on Potomac Run & it will give you an idea of where it is situated within the County. Not much, I know, but at least it's a start.
Also, the names could have maybe changed over time, I did find a Potomac Creek that apparently is between Glendie & Paynes Corner in Stafford & empties into the Potomacc River at Marlboro Point. It's also dammed to form Able Lake (maybe your runs/branches possibly don't exist anymore?) I did find some streams on TopoZone with names like Black Walnut or Haw, but they seem to be in the wrong County.
I know it's frustrating...there has got to be somebody in Stafford or within Virginia who just has the answer right at their fingertips.
My only other idea is perhaps calling someplace like The Virginia Room at Fairfax County Library, maybe they might have the answer or have some more ideas on where you can look for your answers.
