Bear in mind the context of the reference to Newmarket. There is a Newmarket plantation that still exists just off Rt 301 near Bowling Green, Virginia. Bowling Green is the county seat for Caroline Co. Newmarket (the plantation) dates from the mid-1700's and was (is?) a very substantial property belonging to the Baylor family.
