Proof of marriage of Michael Blunt of Spotsylvania County to Elizabeth Mallory

I have good news for all descendants and researchers of Leroy Hamilton and Sukey Blunt. I recently had an article published in the "National Genealogical Society Quarterly", Volume 90, No. 1, March 2002 issue. In the article, "Mallory-Blunt of Virginia-A Miscopied Name Blocks a Line", I corrected a thirty-year old error which previously showed "Henry Blunt" as the husband of Elizabeth Mallory, daughter of Henry Higgason Mallory. In the original colonial document [PRO: C12/398/4], dated 12 September 1761, the husband of Elizabeth Mallory was shown as "Michael" Blunt, rather than "Henry". I was alerted to the error by two Blunt family researchers, Jewell Dunn and Shirley Hermstad, who had purchased a copy of the original deposition from the PRO (Public Records Office) in England. The deposition clearly showed the name of Elizabeth's husband as Michael Blunt. I was fortunate enough to visit the PRO in England personally and viewed the actual parchment document in order to verify the name for myself. It was an amazing experience to handle an original document from 1761.
Thanks to Jewell and Shirley, descendants of Leroy Hamilton and Sukey Blunt now know of their connection to the Mallory family of Virginia. I let a few Hamilton/Blunt researchers know of this wonderful discovery a few years back when I originally found out about it, but I felt that it was important not to put it out on the internet until the information could be provided in a professional manner, in order to properly document the connection and the proof.
Thanks to NGSQ Editor, Elizabeth Shown Mills, this has now been accomplished. A copy of the March 2002 NGSQ issue may be found at most libraries, purchased through the National Genealogical Society at their email address: bookstore@ngsgenealogy.org, or you may contact me directly. The ancestry of Sukey Blunt through her mother's Mallory line is as follows:

Sukey Blunt
+ Leroy Hamilton
Elizabeth Mallory
+ Michael Blunt
Henry Higgason Mallory
+ Sarah (unknown)
Thomas Mallory
+ Elizabeth Higgason
Captain Roger Mallory
+ unknown
Rev. Thomas Mallory
+ Jane (unknown)
Rev. Thomas Mallory
+ Elizabeth Vaughan
Sir William Mallory
+ Ursula Gale
Sir William Mallory
+ Jane Norton
(Note: Queen Elizabeth II of England also descends from this couple through her mother.)
Sir John Mallory
+ Margaret Thwaytes
Sir William Mallory
+ Joan Constable
etc...

Further information on the continuation of the Mallory line in England may be found in Sheila V. Mallory Smith's book, "A History of the Mallory Family" (Sussex: Phillimore and Co., 1985). There is an internet site which also contains information on the Mallory family of Virginia and England at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pbarker/
I hope that this is helpful to my fellow descendants of Leroy and Sukey. Please contact me with any questions, information or further documentation regarding this couple and their ancestry. All the best, Shana E. Proffitt
