Greetings:
I am trying to identify the Lucy Westbrook who is said to have married Joel Harris on 13 Nov 1796 in Southampton, Virginia and been the mother of his children.
My first problem is that I cannot find this marriage in the Southampton records online. Does anyone have evidence of this marriage? Could it have actually happened in one of the adjoining counties?
Also, does anyone know who this Lucy Westbrook was? It has been suggested to me that she may have been Lucy Person Westbrook, widow of John Westbrook, however I have a few problems with this idea. Firstly, there is a problem with age. It seems to me that Lucy Person Westbrook was a bit too old (born around 1754) to be the Lucy Westbrook who married Joel Harris. There is also a relationship problem: Joel and Lucy Harris's son Joel first married Mary A. Westbrook, who was the grandchild of John and Lucy Person Westbrook (the daughter of their daughter Dorcas). If the two Lucys were one and the same, that would mean that Joel Jr. married the daughter of his half-sister. Would this have been considered acceptable in 1824 (the date of the marriage)?
Any insights on Lucy Westbrook Harris would be greatly appreciated. I believe I am descended from this Lucy Westbrook and Joel Harris (the elder) through their son Howell Harris.
