My wife's maiden names is Barnes. Most of her family history appears to focus near Smyth County and Bristol VA and TN.
I've been able to trace most of her family back to a John ThomaS Barnes born 24 Mar 1838 who married a Mary Zimmerman.
Their Children were L Byrd Barnes, James A. Barnes, Minnie Barnes, Thomas William Barnes, and Charles Rufus Barnes. My wife descends from Charles Rufus. I have decent records for Charles and Thomas.
I have a census record for John Thomas Barnes in 1900 but cannot find anything earlier despite it appearing that he was a life long resident of Virginia and Tennessee. The 1900 Census indicated his parents were both born in Virginia.
Some oral family tradition indicates that either John Thomas Barnes or his father may have changed their last name at some point.
If you have information that would help me to determine the parents of John Thomas Barnes or fill in more information I'd appreciate it.
