Hi Trish,

You mention that you have a marriage license for Alvertia Lindsey and James N. Cowan. Is this a typed transcription from the state of Virginia or is it a copy of the original marriage license and return from Smyth County? The former information comes from a transcription of the Smyth County Marriage Register. The book has a lot of detailed information in it, but doesn't usuually include the mother's maiden name. The latter document usually identifies the full name of both parents. If this isn't what you have, I would encourage you to get a copy from the Smyth County Courthouse. They are housed in a series of black binders there.

Best of luck in your searches.
Mike Curtis
