To the best of my knowledge, the earliest birth records can be found starting in 1853, but they were very sporadic. They are available on microfilm from the State of Virginia Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Roll #37, Smyth County Birth Records 1853-1875 (missing 1863). Unfortunately, this doesn't help in your search for your ancestor. If Sarena was married in Smyth County the register will give the names of her parents (usually the father's surname only). It will list her place of birth and her age at the time of marriage, but not her birth date.

Best regards,
Mike Curtis
