I'm not sure that I can help, but my relatives include Joseph Cole, Jr (March 22, 1743/44 to Sept 2, 1826). His parents were Joseph Cole, Sr and Freelove Mason (from Swansea, Bristol, MA) . Joseph Jr was married twice, first to Remember Cole (1752-Abt 1776) and second to Margaret Leeper (1752-?). He and Remember had at least three children: John (b 12/24/1771), Freelove (Dec 24, 1773-Mar 22,1848) and Joseph Cole III (b 1775). Freelove Cole married Thomas Thomas and is reported to have suggested the name "Marion" for the seat of the newly formed Smyth County in 1832 (in honor of the Swamp Fox, Frances Marion). I, however, am descended from the Leeper side. They had at least 8 children, including James "Squire" Cole (1781-1852), Raney Cole (1776-?), Samuel Cole (1777-1826), Ann Cole (1779), Andrew Cole (1780-?), Elizabeth Cole (1784-?), Remember Cole (1790-?), Jane Cole (1797-?). Much of this information is from the World Family Tree Vol 13, Family #632, Vol 35 #413 and Vol 44 #151. I don't have any other information about Samuel Cole, but that name occurs in almost every generation and my great-great grandfather was Samuel Cole and was in the cavalry of the CSA. I have a photo of him in uniform holding the Bible.
James "Squire" Cole is my great-great-great-great grandfather, he married Dorcas McClure (January 19, 1804).
I can send you what else I have on the Coles if you like. I also have some Coles on my Mother's side, but not direct relatives. All of these relatives lived in Wythe, Smyth & Washington Counties, VA.
