Last Man Hung in Virginia

I have a picture of a relative and on the back it says "Our relative and last man to be hung in Virginia". Where might I start to find out who that person was? Some of the surnames in my heritage are Holmes, Glenn, Whetzel, and Dellinger all of who lived in Shenandoah County.
