Shenandoah County Property Tax lists for 1795-1803

I recently viewed micro-film of Personal Property Tax Lists for Shenandoah County. Near the left hand side of a list, between the column for "Dates of Lists rec.d from Individual" and the column for "Persons Names Chargeable with the Tax" is a column for "Nš. of Capt" which contains numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. What is the significance of that column? The column appears on the 1795 through 1803 tax lists.
