CONNS of Russell and Scott County Virginia
Posted by: DIANNA GILLIAM (ID *****6591) Date: May 24, 2005 at 23:10:20
  of 1706

We actually seem to be looking for a turnip truck it seems!!
Our ancestor Jesse Wilson CONN certainly seems to have fallen from the back of one or was beamed down from another planet into Virginia perhaps! Years of searching for his parents and siblings have thus far brought us no closer to learning who he was and where he came from! We could sure use some help!

We know (or at least we think we know!) and believe that Jesse Wilson CONN was born abt 1788 in Virginia (some researchers have shown him born as early as 1775), possibly or presumably in Russell County (in the part that became Scott County in 1815). He married Mary PENDLETON abt 1804-05(?). Mary was born in Russell County in 1787, the daughter of Benjamin and Frances Ball (CARTER) PENDLETON.

It does not appear from what we have been able to learn over these past years that Jesse is part of the Reverend Hugh or Gerald Trammell CONN lines. We believe however that he was possibly/probably a brother to Levi CONN who was listed near him in the 1820 census but removed himself and his family to Floyd County Kentucky in that same year.

The 1792 RUSSELL COUNTY VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST LOWER DISTRICT JOHN CARTERíS LIST has a Samuel CONN and a Benjamin PENDLETON listed. They are also listed on the 1793 list.
The 1799 and 1800 listings show Benjamin CONN and Benjamin PENDLETON

Was this Benjamin PENDLETON on the tax list the father of our Mary (PENDLETON) CONN and if so could this mean that Jesse Wilson and Levi were sons of the Samuel CONN listed??? Who was Samuel CONN'S spouse?

Were the lists of 1799 and 1800 mistakenly transcribed to show Messers PENDLETON and CONN both with the given name Benjamin when perhaps it should have still been Sameul CONN and Benjamin PENDLETON?

What happened to Samuel CONN? Does anyone have a record of a family for him? Was there a Benjamin CONN in Russell County around the turn of the century? Is there a record of a family for him??

Is there a CONNection between the CONNS on the Russell County tax list and Jesse Wilson and Levi? Some have proposed that perhaps Wilson was Jesse's mother's maiden name or the name of a close family friend. Were there WILSON families in Russell County during this time period? Who were the Russell County CONNS? Where did they come from? Where did they go? Help! Help! Help!

As mentioned Levi migrated from Scott County Virginia to Floyd County Kentucky with his family in 1820. Jesse Wilson and Mary (PENDLETON) CONN remained in Scott County until the mid 1840's and then migrated to Morgan County Kentucky where it appears they remained for the rest of their lives. Mary died 4 July 1852 but Jesse lived several more years. Following the death of Mary (PENDLETON) CONN in July 1852 Jesse married Margaret (KIMBALL) ELLIOTT April 1853. I believe this could very well be the same Margaret KIMBALL who married Enoch PENDLETON in Scott County in 1849 and apparently married an unknown KIMBALL between then and 1853 when she married Jesse.

Children we believe to be from the union of Jesse Wilson and Mary (PENDLETON) CONN are:

Margaret b. abt 1807 m. Jacob MOSELY May 1822
John b. 1808 m. Ursala CARTER Nov 1824
Cynthia b. 1812 m. George Washington CARTER Jun 1829
James b. 1813-14 m. Keziah Rebecca LANE Mar 1835 (divorced later, she then married William SMITH of Scott County in 1857 and also moved to Morgan County, Kentucky)
Catherine b. abt 1817 m. David LANE abt 1835
Reuben Harrison b. 1819 m. Elizabeth ROSE bef 1846
Jesse Wilson Jr. b. Jan 1822 m. Emerine HUNTER
Josiah R. b. 1825 m. Frances (BARNETT) RAMSEY
Lucinda b. 1826 m. William J. JENKINS

Possibly:
Elizabeth b. 1833 m. Andrew SPARKS 21 Sep 1854 in Morgan County, KY

At one point there was a son named Samuel b. abt 1810 in the list but that seems to have been an error...

Children often attributed to Jesse Wilson and Mary are
Andrew Jackson b. Feb 1836(later proven to be their
grandson instead through James and Keziah)
Mary Elizabeth b. abt 1838 m. William Morgan BARNETT in
Morgan County Kentucky 22 April 1855 but at some point
she and Mr. BARNETT returned to Russell County where
they were subsequently divorced and he remarried in
1882. No additional information on Mary Elizabeth at
this time.
Rosannah/Rosemary b. 1843 m. George C. BARNETT
Washington b. 1844 absolutely nothing else known about this child if indeed he existed at all!

I believe that Mary Elizabeth and Rosannah were more than likely grandchildren instead of children but have not been able to verify this. If they are it would seem that there might have been another older son we are missing (possibly the Samuel b. 1810 who seemed to disappear...perhaps he and the mother of the two daughters and possibly Washington who is listed in only one census and no further trace of him to be found!) unless perhaps they could have been the firstborn children of Reuben and Elizabeth?? Supposedly they had twelve children but I have only been able to identify seven of them. :(

It has been suggested to me (and it seems very feasible) that the BARNETTS (Frances, James Russell, William Morgan and George C) who married into the CONN line were siblings (or cousins at least) children of James and Mary (BELCHER) BARNETT. Another source says their mother was Betsy BELCHER...could this have been Mary Elizabeth nicknamed Betsy or are we talking about two separate BELCHER girls and two BARNETT households?)

With the exception of Jesse Wilson Jr. it appears that most of the CONN children married in Scott County or when in Kentucky married someone from Scott County or elsewhere in Virginia. It also would seem that with the possible exception of Catherine (CONN) LANE all of the children migrated to Morgan County Kentucky about the same time Jesse Wilson and Mary (PENDLETON) CONN made the move and once there settled near one another, at least initially. Mary Elizabeth (CONN) BARNETT seems to have been the only one to return to live in Virginia.

Many descendants of Levi CONN who migrated to Floyd County Kentucky with his spouse Nancy JARRELL (some records have the surname spelled SERAL) are still in Floyd County today. Jesse Wilson's descendants seem to be a bit more spread about. Beth, Carl and I are proof of this!

Also in Scott County Virginia tax lists (early 1820's) heirs of Jacob CON of Oppossum Creek...who was Jacob and who were his heirs???

Some years ago another cousin we seem to have lost track of (Buzz if you are still out there phone home!) posted the following as a possibility for Jesse Wilson and Levi's parents:

>>WILLIAM CONN, Rev War Pension App, 1834, KY (W8616, NC&SC). b. 1760 Somerset NJ; enl and lived in Lincoln Co NC. m. Eliz Alexander; had children in Russell Co VA: 1) Elizabeth (m. Whitley) b. 1781, 2) b. abt.1783, 3) b. abt.1785, 4) b. abt. 1789, 5) b. abt 1791, 6,7,8) dates unknown. Jesse and Levi could fit 4 and 5 nicely. This is the sole record of a Conn having children in Russell Co in that era that I'm aware of<<

There was also mention of the Samuel CONN on the 1792 tax list...might he have been William Samuel or Samuel William???

Someone out there must have the answers we are searching for! Anyone with information that might help us solve our mysteries (or correct any errors we might have) please reply to us directly as well as to the message board here.

Thanks tons!
