Biography and Notes:

Peter Carter F-1. Buried:

There is something of a problem: the Prayer Book quote "Peter Carter in the year 1788 in ye year my Life 82" conflicts with the presumed order of birth from the will of Thomas Jr. that clearly places Peter second in the line of succession, i.e., Thomas III gets Barford and then Peter and Edward share the King George Estate. And only Charles is mentioned as a minor at the writing of the will in 1728 ..... and ..... there are eight sons cited. Were there some twins along the way???

And then, although his will was probated back in Fauquier County, we know he was in Amherst as late as 1788: " ... George, with me Peter in Amherst, all others on Clinch ...". However ..... could "me" be interpreted as "me son" Peter?

Name: Peter CARTER

Note:
GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. I. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982. Page 652. "It has been learned positively that Peter Carter, who died in Fauquier in 1789 at an advanced age, was the son of Captain Thomas Carter, Jr., of Lancaster, as was surmised; and that in addition to the five sons named in the October Quarterly, he had four others - Thomas, Joseph, and Norris, who settled on Clinch River, and George, who remained in Fauquier." [contradicted by The Prayer Book - ' ... George with me Peter in Amherst ... ']

The above refers to Ibid, page 621 - "Peter Carter, (Thomas (2) ,Thomas (1)) inherited a plantation in Kg. George county from his father, but the records do not show that he ever lived there. He may have died in Fauquier county at an advanced age, as Feb 22, 1790, the inventory of the personal estate of Peter Carter amounting to 100 pounds 3 shillings was recorded in that county; or he may have removed to that part of Albemarle that became Buchingham and Amherst as he had five sons who settled in Amherst, and his brother Charles Carter, of whom he had been the guardian after the death of their father, also settled and died in Amherst." Names sons: Edward, Henry, Job ,Solomon, Peter Jr.

[Is this another Peter - or are Edward and Henry middle names of those cited in The Prayer Book?]

Birth date from Van A. Stilley, Wilmington, NC.
Birth: 1706 in Barford, Lancaster Co., VA
Death: DEC 1789/90 in Warrenton, Fauquier Co., VA [will probated Fauquier, but no proof of death]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Note: Peter served in the French and Indian War (1753) under the command of Captain Brian Fairfax. Some sources indicate he also served in the Revolutionary War, but this seems questionable due to his age".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peter died at an advanced age.

Inherited the half of his father's 500 acre plantation next to the
river in King George county. He purchased the rest of this plantation
and lived there until late in life, when he removed to Fauquier.
Owned the old Prayer Bood of his grandfather, Capt. Thomas Carter, Sr,
which contained many valuable records of the family. This old book
descended to Elizabeth Carter, daughter of George Carter, grandson of
Peter, who in the fifties became the second wife of a Mr. John Payne.
They removed to California after the war.
