Kim you are a dear. And a big help.
Family rumor has it that little Hortense was sent from Virginia to Kentucky for Safety reasons during the war.... the family who she traveled with "kidnapped her" (according to Hortense's stories...now Hortense was a romantic and stories can change over time) and she claims they were good to her at first but then was worked as a servant ...she didn't get back to her mother for several years. Don't know if I have the story straight of course but I am looking into any little hint out there. Looks like Hortense became a domestic servant when she was so young. Maybe she is with this mystery family in 1870...she would be nine years old. It is rumored that her father was part Cherokee Indian...whatever race he was it is possible that Hortense's father was not white and maybe that is why she was left to servantry. Many dark skinned people claimed or tried to claim Cherokee ancestry in order to explain their dark skin when of mixed race in order to help with their cival rights as the blacks had no rights.

Where did you see the the marriage record for Rachel Lee and James Taylor? I can't seem to find it online. This is a good possiblity for Hortense's father as a cousin thought his name was maybe Jim Turner.

Looks like the Rachel I'm looking for was married more than once.

The Rachel Lee's you mentioned who married Mr Fletcher was only 16 in Russell County when Hortense was born. See the census below. She is a good possiblity
This Rachel Lee married a Fletcher according to the records posted oh the Russell Co VA website.

1860 Census Russell Co Virginia New Garden Township 1860, part 1
http://rhobard.com/census/russell/newgarden.html
house, last name, first name, age, sex , color occupation real personal birthplace misc
801 Lee Mathias 43 m Tailor 97 illiterate

Charles 11 m school
Martha 5 f
802 Lee Robert R. 30 m Clerk 25
Mary 30 f House Keeper
803 Lee Elvira 41 f Seamstress
Loueasy 19 f House Keeper

(So Hortense was possibly born out of wedlock if this is the same Rachel Lee.)
Alexander Mathias Lee and his wife's place of burial are posted on this cemetery site

A.M Lee was a slave owner. He and Eliza had a baby the same year Hortense was born. If Rachel was their daughter than she and her mother were both having babies around the same time. I was looking into the Fletcher husband for Rachel Lee but just not sure about him. Here is the link to their marriage record, thank you.

Do you have more info on the census you found for 1870 Rachel Lee and Henry C Bates???
Brian Caudill has an annotated census of Whitesburg, Letcher KY which lists as follows. I wonder if it is correct for this Rachel's parents?

1870 Precinct #2
108 BATES,
Henry C. 25 KY (s/o James Bates & Elizabeth Adams)
Rachel 28 KY (d/o David Lee & Sarah Taylor)

So this Rachel, if is Hortense's mother doesn't have the 9 year old Hortense with her in 1870....which fits the story Hortense gave us. Assuming this is correct for this Rachel's parents...I went looking into David Lee and his wife..... here is this Rachel??? but they not in Russell Co Virginia where Hortense was born. hmmmm
