I browsed through the census, but without further information it will be difficult to find William's parents. Yes, the Browning name is very common in Russell Co., but the name can also be found throughout SW Virginia and into TN. I looked at the transcripts at the Russell Co., VA genweb site but there are no records of a William Thomas Browning.

Have you tried his death certificate? If that was not available or not helpful I would try looking at the counties around Hawkins CO, TN and those near where William first appears on the census. He most likely would have lived near Hawkins Co., Tn since that is where he married. The Virginia counties next to Hawkins are Scott, Lee and Washington.

Another option is looking at the marriage registry in Hawkins Co. They usually list the names of the groom and bride. Your local library may be able to get a microfilm copy of it, if available.

Good luck.
Sandra
