John Young married Jerusha Patrick Query
Posted by: R Young (ID *****3737) Date: January 13, 2008 at 14:23:48
  of 1706

Seeking information on John Young who married Jerusha (Gersuia) Patrick, and to find out if this John Young was connected to the Lamont Youngs.

John Young was born about 1770 in Washington County, Virginia.
Jerusha Patrick was born about 1772 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
She is the daughter of Jeremiah Patrick and Sarah "Sally" Blair.
Jeremiah Patrick was from a Scottish Family.
Jerusha died about 1862 in Wayne County, Kentucky.
John and Jerusha were married about 1790 in Russell County, Virginia.

It is believed that John & Jerusha left Virginia about 1813 to journey to Kentucky. They settled in Wayne County around 1820 near Mt Pisgah.

Jerusha shows up on the 1850 & 1860 Wayne County, Kentucky Census living with her daughter Lillie (Young) Brown. She is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Wayne Co., Kentucky.

Children of John & Jerusha are listed as the following:
Sarah Young (b 1795) married Stephen Marsh in Wayne Co., Kentucky.
Israel Young (b 1796 died 1847 in Wayne Co., Kentucky).
Burdine Young (b 1800 died about 1858 in Travisville, Fentress Co., TN)
John Young (b 1805 died about 1858 in Denton County, Texas)
Andrew Young (b 11 Jul 1806 and died 31 Aug 1846 in Clinton Co.,KY)
Edward Young (b 1808 and married Susannah Minzes in Wayne Co., KY)
Lillie Young (b 1810 d 1897 in Wayne Co., KY married Noah Brown)

There is speculation that when John & Jerusha's son John Young went west to Decatur County, Missouri that John Young went to visit him and never returned from the trip.
Jerusha then moved into Noah Brown's household to live with her daughter Lillie (Young) Brown.

Lillie Brown, Jerusha, Andrew and wife Edith Smith (1809-1894) were charter members of the Pleasant Hill Church in Sunnybrook, Wayne County, Kentucky.

The basis for speculation that John and Jerusha came from the Virginia region is the following tax lists.

The 1782 Montgomery County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List
Transcribed by Jeffrey C. Weaver, July 1, 1998
Patrick, Hugh 1 2 3 20
Patrick, James 1 3 2
Patrick, Jeremiah 1 4 15
Young, Ezekiel 1 5 18
Young, John 1 5 6

1795/96 Russell County, VA Tax List

Upper District Will Webb, Commissioner

Daniel Young-1
David Young-1
Edwaed Young-1
Israel Young-1
John Young-1
John Young, Jr.-1
Samuel Young-1
Jeremiah Patrick-1
John Patrick-1

This places a John Young in the same county with Jeremiah Patrick in both 1782 and 1795 & 96. I believe that my John Young is the John Young, Jr. on the 1796 Russell Co., Tax List. (Note: Some of this information is copy/paste from orginal posts made by Anna Bertram on Rootsweb).

Jeremiah Patrick did not leave Virginia until about 1813 when he moved to Magoffin Co., KY. He died there in 1822. Since the 1810 Wayne Co., KY census only has an Edward Young and a Samuel Young, and a John Young does not show up on the Wayne Co., Census until 1820, then it is possible that John and Jerusha Patrick Young did not leave Virginia until about 1813 also. But then, he could be one of the John Youngs on the 1810 Cumberland Co., KY census.

I am descended from Burdine Young who lived just south of the Wayne County, Kentucky border in Fentress County, Tennessee.

There was a post on rootsweb that listed the John Sr listed above in the 1782 tax list with a will that was proved in 20 May 1783 as having the following children: John, William, James, Robert, Issabel, Margaret, Rebeccah, and Sarah. I do not know if this is the brothers/sister of John Young who married Jerusha Patrick but I logged it in my notes.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, especially if there might be information to tie this John Young in with the Lamont-Youngs.
