HOWARD E. MARSHALL
Howard Elias Marshall, 73, of Coeburn, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 19, 2003) at Sunbridge Care Rehab-Hillside in Kingsport, Tenn.
He had retired in 1987 from Pittston Coal Company where he had worked as a coal miner for 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served in Korea.
Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Delphia (Greene) Marshall; brothers Haskel Marshall and Ervin Marshall; sisters Betty Marshall, Lorraine Marshall Yates and Josie Marshall Yates.
Survivors include his wife Verda Mae Marshall of Coeburn; son Wayne (Alley Cat) Marshall of Coeburn; daughter Patricia Marshall of Coeburn; granddaughter Robin Arwood and her husband Wayne of Coeburn; great-grandchildren Amber Arwood and Dakota Arwood both of Coeburn; brother Claude Marshall of Clintwood; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Mullins Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Lester Mullins officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Memorial Garden Cemetery in Coeburn. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Pound VFW Post 9600 and American Legion Post 66.
Pallbearers will be family, friends and Harold Stanley. Special honorary pallbearer: Amber Arwood. Honorary pallbearers: Wayne Arwood and Ed Endicott.
The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Mullins Funeral Home chapel where a service will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Carter Lee Yates
MAXIE, Va. - Carter Lee Yates, 52, of Maxie, passed away Friday, Feb. 20, 2004 at his home.
Born in Buchanan County, Jan. 27, 1952, he was the son of Emory Yates and Imal Yates Yates of Maxie. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he loved to fish, deer hunt and spend time with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Josh and Emaline Yates and Bart and Josie Yates.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Allene Harrison of Maxie and Lenetta Lester of Vansant, Va.; two brothers, Benny Lynn Yates and wife, Ola of Cumberland, Ky., and Randy Emory Yates and wife, Marsha of Maxie; six nephews, two nieces and three great-nephews. He will be mourned by a special friend, Cecil Rice of Maxie.
Funeral services for Carter Lee Yates will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church at Harman, Va., with Elders Andy Deel and Jimmy Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in the Yates Cemetery on Greenbrier, Vansant.
Active Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be Southwest Dialysis Unit, Mercy Ambulance Service and Hospice of Southwest Virginia.
The family will receive friends at the church today after 6 p.m. Services will be held at 7 p.m.
