In my search for Soloman Baldwin, I believe I have come across the Jackson Riley you are looking for.
It seems your Jackson Riley may have married Elizabeth, the daughter of Layton and Rebecca Mitchel. That seems to be the best explanation about his proximity to the family in the 1850 Russell VA census. Elizabeth Riley is the sister of Andrew Mitchel, with who she is living, next door to Jackson. There is another brother, Enoch Mitchel, living nearby. Two young children, John Riley and James R. Riley, are living with Elizabeth's parents, Layton and Rebecca Mitchel. James R. Riley is denoted as a "pauper" on the census.
In the 1840 Russell VA census, Jackson Reilay, age 20-30, with apparently a wife and a son and daughter, are listed Andrew Mitchell, who is said to be half-brother to Soloman Baldwin (my ancestor). A John Reilay is also listed on the same page--I was thinking he might be a brother of Jackson. I note one of the children who is supposed to be a child of Jackson and Elizabeth was named John.
Apparently Layton and Rebecca Mitchel raised James R. Riley; he is still with them at age 12 in the 1860 Russell VA census. I do not know what became of the young John or the possible sister.
Enoch Mitchel married first, on October 31, 1850, a wife named Emily Adams. Second, in 1855, he married Letha (Letty or Leety) Mullins. Enoch and Letty had several children.
I guess Enoch Mitchel must have died before 1880, because in the Floyd Co. KY 1880 census his nephew James Riley is found married to Leety. James is 25 (well, really 22 if the 1850 census was accurate), and Leety was 49. They were living with Leety's three older children by Enoch Mitchel--and two of theirs together.

By 1860 they had two children, a son George who was 4, and a daughter Judy who was 2. Someone told me that their marriage split up and they went separate ways.
I do not know what ever became of Jackson Riley.

VA, d. ????, m 2nd James RILEY, 21 Jan 1876, Pike Co., KY/ Children of Enoch and Letty: Andrew, Rebecca J., John, Larken (Lark), James, Issac. Who were the parents of Enoch and Letty? Who were Letty's children from her 2nd marriage to James Riley? When and where did Letty die? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
