There is, and always has been some doubt on the lineage of this
Richard JARRELL and Reuben JARRELL and "Nancy" Mary STOWERS were
probably NOT really his parents.

It may be that because he deserted from the CSA nobody will claim him.

<sorry about that but my conscience would have hurt if I
didn't put that line in; inaappropriate as it is<VBG>>!

I'm looking for additional data on the following:

notes from Holly Heath Mullin, 5 Nov 2001

He & Jane met at a dance; Richard was a fiddle player. Her parents
did not like him & they eloped successfully on the third try.

In the 1860 census he listed property worth $100.

Richard was a confederate soldier who was killed at the end of the
Civil War.

He was AWOL and sitting in his home when he was shot through the
window and killed.

Reports from neighbors say that he was killed by Albert Lincoln's or
one of his band of ruffians, loosely formed into a home guard.

Albert Lincoln was a cousin of Abe, was a southern sympathizer, and
also a little crazy.

Richard Jarrels made his home near Melrose, Va. just outside
Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley.

My Aunt & Uncle live on the same land.

Assassination.

One of the foulest and most deliberate murders we have ever recorded
was perpetuated about 6 miles below Harrisonburg, and one mile from
Melrose, near the Valley Turnpike, in Rockingham County, on Wednesday
evening of last week, about 7 o'clock.

On that evening, and at about that hour, Richard Jarrels, well known
to many of the people of this county, whilst sitting at his fireside
in the midst of his family, as shot and almost instantly killed by
some assassin, who had stealthily approached his dwelling without
having been perceived. The murderer shot through a window, two or
three balls or slugs, entering Jarrels' body on one side and
penetrating his heart, producing death in a few moments.

The unfortunate man, as we have said, was surrounded by his little
family-a wife and four children-at the time he was shot.

The only intimation he or they had that the enemy was near, and that
he was suddenly to be hurried, "unanointed and unanealed", into the
presence of his Maker, was the blaze from the muzzle of the gun and
the report that immediately followed.

We confess our incompetency to describe the scene presented at this
man's humble home on the night of his cruel assassination. He was
slaughtered in the presence of his wife and his little children, his
quivering body, at the crack of the gun, falling helpless, bleeding,
dying right before their eyes, whilst his murderer was concealed but a
few yards distant by the dark shadows of the evening!

It was all together, we repeat, one of the foulest and most dastardly
acts of assassination that ever disgraced a civilized community.

Jarrels was a man about 35 or 38 years of age, of obscure and humble
station, and not occupying a very respectable position in the
community-he had been a deserter from the Confederate army, having
deserted his post and gone over to the U.S. forces near Petersburg
last winter.-His desertion from the army, however, had nothing in the
world to do with his assassination.

At all events, circumstances and facts point significantly to the
party who did the deed and to the motive which led to his untimely
death.

It is known that he was the chief witness against a man named Thos.
Loker in the neighborhood who had been charged with the crime of
bigamy. Loker, it is said, had threatened Jarrels' life as well as
the life of another gentleman who he supposed had been active in the
prosecution of the charge of bigamy, and had not been seen publicly
for sometime until a few days before Jarrels' death, when he was seen
in the woods near where Jarrels resided.- Suspicion, therefore,
naturally attached to Loker, who is known to have uttered threats
against Jarrels because of his agency and connection with the
prosecution against him for bigamy.- Loker is still at large.

We do hope, for the honor of this county, that this foul and horrible
murder will be ferreted out and its author, whoever he may be, brought
to the punishment he so richly deserves. Every man in the community
is interested in his detection and punishment.- Let all, therefore,
render all possible assistance in securing and punishing, as he
deserves, so malignant an assassin and so foul a murderer.

Arrest of a Horse Theif and Bigamist.

We are gratified to state that Thomas Loker, of Dry Fork, a few miles
below Harrisonburg, Rockingham county, charged with horse stealing and
bigamy, has been arrested and committed to jail in Moorefield, Hardy
county, W. Va.

He was arrested one day last week, on Lost River, Hardy county, by two
gentlemen from Rockingham county, from one of whom - Patrick McCarthy,
who resides in this vicinity - he had stolen a horse a short time
since.

Loker, it seems, had been seen in this county, and McCarthy's horse
disappearing at the time he (Loker) left, suspicion attached to him.

He was pursued into Hardy with the result above stated.

Loker, it appears, still keeps up his practice of bigamy. He had
married a respectable lady on Lost River, by the name of Landaker; and
was arrested not far from the residence of his last father-in-law. He
had McCarthy's stolen horse in his possession when he was caught.

It is said that he had courted and agreed to marry a respectable young
lady in Brock's Gap, in this county, a short time since, but pretended
to have been taken violently ill the day he was to have come to our
Clerk's office for the lisence.

This, probably, saved the lady from becoming his victim. In his
pretended illness, he made his will, leaving 25 sheep to the Sheriff
of the county, 50 sheep to his intended bride, and to her mother
$1000, when he hadn't a sheep or a dollar in the world to leave
anybody!

Loker passed by the alias of Capt. Robinson in Hardy. It will be
remembered that he was strongly suspected of connection with the
murder of Richard Jarrels, who was shot dead one night last autumn, as
he stood in the presence of his family at his own fireside. Jarrels
was known to be the chief witness in a then pending case of bigamy.

He had married a respectable lady in Madison county, Va., whilst he
had a wife and children in Rockingham. As the case now stands Loker
is quite a Mormon, he having three wives now living, viz: one in
Rockingham, to whom he was married fifteen years ago, one in Madison,
to whom he was married in February 1865, and the other and last one
heard of in our neighboring county of Hardy. There can exist no doubt
in the world about his being a most determined and reckless scoundrel.
It is hoped, however, that he is now secure and will give the county
no further trouble. He is, we are sorry to say, a Rockingham man,
having been born and raised here.

Loker Still at Large.

We are sorry to state that Thos. Loker, whose arrest in Hardy county,
upon a charge of horse-stealing we mentioned a fortnight ago, is still
at large. He was arrested upon a warrant issued by Justice Fry, and
carried to Moorefield, but the Commonwealth's Attorney for Hardy
decided that the warrant for his arrest was not "in form" and he was
released.

He then went back to Mr. Landakers, whose daughter he had married, and
stated that he was innocent of the charge of horse-stealing, that he
had bought the horse over in Rockingham, and was coming over to get
witnesses to the fact.

He then left, since which time he has not been heard of. Loker had
been, it is said, doing a pretty big business in Hardy. He was
engaged in buying stock, and purchased largely, without, however,
paying anybody. He had succeeded in getting and driving off some
stock; but in a majority of cases had simply purchased the stock, with
the understanding that he was to call again and pay for them.
