Jan, I do have some info for you; my curiosity got the better of me!
Type in : Confederate Prison, Salem, Va. You will get a page with a link to the Salem Museum archive site and an article re the local Salem jail being used to hold Union sympathizers. There is not a lot of other info than what you already have.
