Did you get any responses? Well, I spent the weekend searching at Ancestry.com and came up with quite a bit of info on the names you're looking for.

Elmyra Spruill was John A. Norman's first wife (April 6, 1852), Martha Clayton the second(2 children), and Hester Snell the third.

I found census info from 1850 to 1930. It is quite a bit and if it's ok with you I'll send to your e-mail address.
In the meantime there are some excellent websites for Tyrell County, NC (Where they are from). In your search box key in Tyrell County NC. Open "Tyrell County NC-Genealogy Forum" and further down, "Tyrell County, NC - Your family move into or out of Tyrell Cty". This site has an interesting section on the Spruill family, although it appears that John and Elmyra didn't have children.
