Elisha Williams of Roanoke b1746

We have an Elisha Williams b1746, son of William Williams whose son Elisha was born in Halifax or Bertie Co. NC and later settled in Roanoke. Elisha married Sarah Josey (Josie), daughter of James Josey amd Sarah Charity Swenson of Nansemond Co. VA in 1775. Their son Josiah married Margaret Philips, and...

Josiah's siblings are:

William Williams married Sallie Philips
Elisabeth Norfleet Hunter who married Joseph John Williams and later Hon. Lemuel James Alston
Elisha who married Polly Philips
Joshua
and Martha (no marriages known on final two names)

This family owned land in Franklin Co. NC and later lived near Warrenton, NC near an area called Shocco.

Does anyone out there have connections to this family? We're particularly interested in finding out more about William Williams, father of all. Who was his wife? Did he originally come from further east in Virginia and then settle in the Halifax/Bertie area?

We know he would have been a planter and probably came to NC in about 1725 by way of Pennsylvania and Wales. Also, this family is highly educated with Elisha's sons attending schools such as Harvard and Chapel Hill, so they probably came from a family that was moderately well off or even wealthy.

Any information would be appreciated.

Gerri Williams
