An excerpt from Alexander Compton Senior's will
Believing that I have no right to Negroes Jesse, Fanny, Peter, Henrietta & Davy given to my present wife by the will of her mother and to avoid any dispute or contention about them which might occur and being unwilling th____ my children or their heirs or any other person claiming from _____ them or myself should hold or possess said negroes or any other property of any kind or description .........
The inventory section of his will lists in part the following:
One Negroe woman named Docia $300
One negroe woman named Susan and child named Julia $300
One Negro man Aaron $250 negro lad Tom $350
One Negro woman Letty $250 one boy named Joe $250
One Negro boy William $150 one boy Dennis $100
I have the full copy of the actual will - but these are the only mentions of the disposition of slaves. I got a copy of the will because an ancestor I am research was a slave of Alexander Compton Jr's at one point. This will didn't help me but it may help others.
