Where is Buffalo River now days?

I am curious to know if anybody knows where the Buffalo River (Creek) is south of Farmville VA today?
A map of 1820 of the area shows a Canal on the river? When I look at Google Maps at my ancestor Baker's land near Abilene Rd and Darlington Heights Rd. intersection that was near the old Singleton store, I can't find the river, though his land was on the Buffalo River south of Spring Creek. Has this Buffalo River (Creek) become much smaller then in the early days?
