What happened in 1839?

During 1839, three of the eleven children of William Williams and Hope Walker Glenn, his wife, died. Hope probably died then too, as there is no more record of her after then. Was there an epidemic? The children died between March and July. William and the surviving children moved to North Central MO in the 1840s, around the time many Prince Edward CO families left for greener pastures.
