Request: Where to stay & what to see in Pittsylvania County?

To the locals:
We are hoping to travel to Chatham (County seat?) of Pittsylvania Co. to do some early family research. We are uncertain exactly when we will be going. Can someone recommend a CLEAN and REASONABLY PRICED place to stay that is not too far (or at least an easy drive) near the courthouse or historical center? Also, is there any camping in Chatham or nearby area?

We would also like recommendations on reasonable but yummy dining as well as the 'YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS SEEING THIS WHILE IN THE AREA" .. things to do. Please list and thanks in advance!
