Oakes/Smith
Posted by: Betty McGarity (ID *****5447) Date: December 15, 2010 at 13:57:16
  of 1883

In December of 1788(?) there was a marriage bond registered for a Thomas Oakes (my ancestor)in Pittsylvania County, VA. The brides name was not listed in the bond or any other legal paper. The bondsman was Jesse Smith. Around 1800, both Thomas Oakes and Jesse Smith were found in Rowan County, NC. By this time Thomas had married a "Chloe".

I believe that the marriage in Pittsylvania was to a daughter of Jesse Smith....Whoever she was, they had one daughter named Martha,(my ancestress) and Martha was with him in Rowan County,NC. We know she was born in 1790. I have no information on Jesse Smith. Could someone in either county help me??
