I have a printed copy of the Norfolk County Death Register 1970-1896 for Norfolk County, VA. Transcribed by Emily L. Walker.
Entry on page 318 reads:
Pearson, Rodman, w.m., 8 Nov. 1896. Western Branch, abscess in stomach, 62 yrs, 10 mos, 15 days, Pearson and Catharine Rodman, NJ, farmer, Catharine, PGI W.H. Rodman, son.
The key: name, race, sex, date of death, place of death, cause of death, age, name of parents, birthplace, occupation, marital status(name of spouse), Person giving information/relationship.
Even if you write to Vital Records for a death certificate, you will not get any more than this because this is the only county record still in existence. It is possible that there might be a newspaper obituary, but there were very few at that time. I am going to the Library of Virginia on Thursday and will give a look.
