Using DNA to find our family

We have just received DNA results that compared a descendant of Moses Hughes (b. 1745) of Amherst/Nelson with a descendant of William Hughes of Albemarle County and they match on 37 markers. They are only off by two steps. William Hughes who was born in 1743 and died in 1813 lived near the James River in Scottsville. This information is on my rootsweb data base online if you are interested.

William and Moses Hughes were the only known sons of Thomas Hughes who was born in Goochland County in about 1715 and he died in Albemarle County in 1779.

There is a third Hughes family in Amherst County, and they lived near Harris and Fawn Creeks in Amherst. A descendant of this Hughes family is currently doing the DNA test.

We believe from the little records available that this Hughes family migrated to Goochland/Albemarle from Henrico and the Hanover or New Kent County areas.

DNA has helped us fill in the blanks.
