The University of Virginia (Charlottesville) and the College of William and Mary (williamsburg) contain extensive collections of papers regarding your subject. You will need to search their library using a specific surname, eg. Lightfoot. As to your "first families" question: Generally speaking, you're talking about those who received patents of land from the King. Lee, Lightfoot, Randolph, Peyton are some names that come to mind.
