Isle of Wight, Nansemond Counties / Latter 1600's

My name is David Whitfield. I have traced my line of my family back to a William Whitfield that lived in I.O.W. or Nansemond Counties in late 1600's. He moved south into North Carolina and married Elizabeth Goodman in 1713 in Chowan, Gates County, North Carolina. His sister, Elizabeth Whitfield, married John Smith in 1708 and they founded Smithfield, Virginia.
I believe his father was Matthew Whitfield, but am trying to document this.
Any help out there?
