black line of Newsom's come from Moses Newsom b abt 1709 p surrey co va, son of Thomas Newsom and Elizabeth Crawford...

Moses Newsom married a woman of african-american descent named Judah. They had 4 children all sons named
John
Moses Jr
James
Booth

these siblings settled in the vicinity established families and were "regular and respected members of the community." on eor more served with units of the VA. state militia and may have served in the revolutionary war. they and their descendants were classified as "free blacks" or "free negroes" in later county, church and other civil records. thus there is an african-american line of cousins in the Newsome family.
