Unfortunately, the way you've described it, it could be anywhere in Arlington. Arlington was fairly rural up until World War II, when it start to become more developed. A lot of neighborhoods sprang up during and after the war (the government stayed bigger after the war, and there were a lot more workers who needed homes). In many of these neighborhoods, the houses all looked fairly similar since they were built around the same time.

The only thing I can suggest is that, if you walked over the Potomac to DC, you probably didn't live far from one of the bridges.
