Melanie, I don't know how long you have been doing research. Just in case you are new to it, I would not limit my searches in Virginia to only Amherst County, even though you may know of Thomas having been there. If you are close to a genealogical library or public library with a SWEMS Index (to various genealogical publications, such as the William and Mary Quarterly, Virginia Magazine of History, etc.) it has alphabetical references to surnames and leads you to the publication containing information on that name, for example, any information on a Thomas Riddle (The surname is often shown as Ruddell, Riddell, and Riddel). Hope this helps some.
