My ancestor Joseph Venable b. about 1750 Spotsylvania County, VA, d. 1818 Warren County, Ky. Who was his father?
In the past several months a group of those interested in Venable family history have discussed how we might advance our Venable research through a new tool for genealogy purposes, Y- DNA testing. Since a father’s DNA is passed to his son essentially unchanged through the generations. Samples can be compared with others of the same surname, if they match or very nearly match this indicates they share a common ancestor at some point in time. This provides a tool for researchers to use along with traditional genealogical documentation to connect families. Valuable research time can be saved by not attempting to connect to the wrong Venable line.
A Venable DNA Project has started at FamilyTree DNA. As part of our project, we are seeking volunteers who descend from an unbroken male Venable line. We encourage female Venable descendants to recruit brothers, fathers, uncles or male cousins who carry the Venable line to provide a sample for you. There is some cost associated with the test, however you are able to order a base test and upgrade later. We have also provided a Venable General Fund for contributions toward the purchase of test kits if you are willing to help others. This would be used to defray the cost for those who are willing to provide samples, but would not be able to participate without this help.
