Here's what I found on the Alexandria background. The comments in parentheses are mine. James Eugene Finch, son of Taylor and Alice Finch, was born in Alexandria on July 7, 1894. It appears as though Alice had been married before, with the 1900 census identifying two other children who are named as step-children to Taylor. The names of the children, a boy and a girl, are difficult to read, but look like Cleveland, age 15, and Anna, age 11. Their last name is listed but not easy to identify. Alice's obituary in the Alexandria Gazette on May 4, 1908, indicates that she died the day before at her home at 718 Jefferson Street in Alexandria. It also identifies her as the wife of Taylor Finch and says she was a native of Stafford County (Va.) and survived by three children. Taylor must have re-married because in the 1910 census, a woman named Jennie Finch is identified as his wife. They were also listed on the 1930 census. (I could find no record that they had children.) In the Washington Post, there was a marriage announcement on September 16, 1916 for Mozelle Gertrude Dunn to Eugene Finch at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. (I could not find a record of a marriage license when I checked but I was looking under "James" rather than "Eugene.") James and Mozelle had a son, James Eugene, Jr., who was born on November 28, 1917. He died of pneumonia on July 13, 1918. They had a daughter, Alice Winette, who was born on December 6, 1918. She died of pneumonia on February 15, 1920. James completed a draft registration card in 1917. He indicated that he was living at 1706 Prince Street in Alexandria and working as a brakeman for Washington Southern (railroad). He indicated that he was married and was a member of the Virginia National Guard, at the rank of private with the infantry. He described himself as of medium height and medium build, with blue eyes and light-colored hair. At some point James and Mozelle's marriage ended. (Not sure how helpful the following is but...) According to the December 13, 1924, Washington Post, Charles W. Roberts, 24, and Mozelle G. Dunn, (23 or 28?), of Hume, Virginia, obtained a marriage license. (Hume is in Fauquier County, Va.) According to Mozelle's obituary in the November 13, 1953, Washington Post, she died on November 9, 1953. She was living at 2706 South Cleveland Street in Arlington, Va. She is described as the wife of Charles W. Roberts, mother of Charles W. Roberts, Jr., and Mrs. Charles A. McGarvey, and sister of John Russel Dunn, Emma Jane Britton and Mrs. H. E. Turner. She was buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria. According to the Veterans Administration, James Eugene Finch is buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Their records indcate that he served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. Notify Administrator about this message?
