Haven't heard this story about a lady being involved. The story does go around that the surveyors did come out of the mountains for the weekend into the area called Denton Valley and became intoxicated. Come Monday morning they were suffering with a hang over and had no desire to return back to the spot where they had stopped. So they continued on east from the point in the valley. Looking at a map of that part of Va/Tn/NC you can see where the line probably should have gone straight through. A Denton resident told me that the moonshine spirits consumed by the surveyors was brewed by a Denton resident of the valley. All the stories told of the occasion are not verified, so some could be fact and some could be legend. It is a fact that in the past, moonshine as it is called, has been produced in large quantities in the area around what we know as the "Offset"
