Viola Gustine BELFIELD McNeal of Lancaster VA

James “Pete” Philip McNeal b. Aug 1878 VA VA VA married Viola Gustine Belfield (possibly Bellfield) McNeal b. Mar or May 1884 VA VA VA they lived in Lancaster Co, but could have been from anywhere in Virginia especially adjoining counties on the Northern Neck like Richmond Co or Northumberland Co. Pete & Viola had 3 or 4 boys two of which were John William “Johnnie” (my grandfather), Pete (possibly a Jr?) and at least 1 girl. The elder Pete committed suicide when my grandfather was a young child, maybe around 1909? Afterwards the family unit pretty much scattered & the details are sketchy at best.

Viola Gustine Belfield is a mystery. I have no idea who her parents were or where she was from. I don’t know what happened to her after Pete committed suicide. I believe that family and friends took in the children … so where did Viola go?

I think James “Pete” Philip McNeal’s mother was Clemintine McNeal b. @1847. Clemintine could have been a Davis. He might have had a brother that was 10 years older than he was named Chas McNeal b. 1868 VA VA VA. They all show up on a 1880 census together living with a head of house James McNeal that WAS NOT directly related to any of them. I assume Clemintine must have been widowed and taken in by a family member since Pete’s father is not in the household, because all of the last names are the same. Does anyone have any information on Pete or his parents?

Any ideas how I should continue my search for either of their origins?
-Cindy McNeal (great granddaughter)
