My gg grandmother, Elizabeth Atherton Seidel b. 1837, was married to Stafford Reeves of Welton, Kingston-upon-Hull, East Riding, Yorkshire b. 1826. There is a marriage recorded in Virginia in 1856 between Stafford Reeves and Elizabeth A. Leidell, which I have taken to be a transcription error, since the date and place fit what I know from the story my uncle has told me. He also said that Atherton Seidell (Seidel and Seidell seem to be interchangeable, depending which side of the Atlantic you stand on), who made his millions in the property boom in Washington during the 1920s threw a ball to introduce Stafford and Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth and granddaughter, Constance Elizabeth to the glitterati of Wahington. Atherton later lost most of his money (but kept his apartment in the Seidell Building)and took a job in the Office of Statistics at the Dept. of Agriculture and was known for driving a Citroen 2CV. I have located Atherton's family in the US census records. I have not been able to locate her father. He was born in Bethlehem Pennsylvania, which should have put him on the Union's side in the War Between the States. He was apparently panning for gold (maybe living in Atlanta, Georgia)when war broke out and joined the confederates. He met Stafford Reeves, who was working as a foreign correspondent, riding between the lines. We know he was imprisoned by the Union towards the end of the war. Stafford presented his new wife at the Royal Society for the Advancement of Science, where she was allegedly the Belle of the ball. Any insights would be terrific.
