Lillie, thanks for your suggestions. My original message was dated October 2001; since that date I have visited Madison County and Slate Mills. My daughter, Laura, and I saw Hitt Mountain and the remains of Joseph Hitt's cabin (unsure which Joseph Hitt). This is beautiful countryside, a must see for anyone interested in Madison County VA family history. I contacted Earl Hitt and he told me that I am related to Peter Hitt through John Hitt; others have said I am related through the Joseph Hitt line. Stilll researching and trying to figure out this puzzle. - Joan (grgrgranddaughter of Joseph Hitt).
