James Mathews Sr. was born in the area of Surry Co, VA ca. 1680 and later moved to the area of NC that would become Halifax County where he died in early 1762. Parts of his family spent many years in Surry, Brunswick and Lunenburg Counties in VA through the 1700s, Edgecombe, Halifax and Chatham Counties in NC through the post-Revolutionary War period and then on to:

Edgefield Co, SC
Davidson, Dickson, Montgomery, Williamson (and others) Counties in TN
Baldwin, Hancock, Washington, Wilkes (and others) Counties in GA
Autauga and Jackson Counties in AL

After working on this family for over 10 years I've virtually completed my research and the majority of it through the mid-1800s is available on for free on my website: http://southernmatthews.com. The site is fully searchable and sourced (nearly 600 sourced entries) and printed out is almost 200 pages long.
