Surnames discussed: Baker, Terry, Thomason, Garnett, Synan, Humphrey/Humphreys, Oakes, Hooper, Ogg, Sumpter, Grubbs, Dunn, Harris, Sims, Walton, Brockman, Mann, Michie, Sandidge Thank you in advance for your time and patience in helping me. Two other distant cousins and I have been independently working on these lines for some time and not until recently were we able to start connecting the dots a bit better. For a person who had felt she did not have enough info to present some questions to this list, I now fear that, after working with the cousins and doing some more research, I have a great abundance of info and questions...to the point that some of you may feel I am being verbose. However, I feel that if I omit any of the info, someone out there might miss out on reading something usable/useful to help themselves or we three cousins. James O. and Elizabeth Terry Baker are my 3rd gt gpa and were married in Louisa Co. on 14 Jan 1828. Their eldest child and my 2nd gt gfa, William Daniel Baker was b. in VA in 1829. By about 1833-34, they had migrated to Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH (in SE OH along the Ohio River) and by the 1850 census were in Bloomfield Twp. in neighboring Jackson Co., OH where they in fact lived out their lives. . Their second child, Mary Ann, may have been b. in VA. The next 2 children, Emanuel and Charles, were born in Gallia Co., and later several more children rounded out the family. They also adopted a son, Osborn Scurlock, b. 1868 in OH. Elizabeth was b. in 1809 in VA and d. 27 Mar 1889 in Wellston, Jackson Co., OH. James O. was b. in VA abt. 1810-1811 and d. 20 Mar 1878 in Jackson Co., OH. Dick Baker, a distant cousin and a gt granddson of the above-mentioned Charles, and I have been sharing info for some time and we are wondering if James was related to the Louisa Co. Baker family who were tobacco farmers and miners. That family seems to be the only Baker family in the area at that time and was connected to the Dunn, Harris, Sims and Walton families in Louisa Co.. ??Would any of you folks have any thoughts or suggestions that would help us find out who were James Overton Baker's parents? We have not been able to find any other Baker family in neighboring areas for that time period. Perhaps we have missed some. I did find where James O. participated in a Judith Robinson property auction sale in 1831 in Louisa Co. so that tells us that Elizabeth and James O. had not yet migrated to Ohio. We have not been able to find a census report for them for 1830 in VA. We could not determine that they were living in a Lousia Co. Terry household because all the Terrys were accounted for. The only Baker home that their ages would fit in to, per the census, was the Newell Baker home but Newell may have had family members of his own unrelated to James. We don't know anything about Newell or any of the other Louisa Co. Bakers listed in the assorted censuses. ??Does anybody know anything about Newell/Newel Baker? We do note a "Daniel Baker SW" listed in the 1830 Louisa census but there are no marks to indicate anybody was living in the residence. ??Does anybody know what "SW" means? My husband and I hope to visit Louisa Co. later in June and do some research that might give us more information. Dick Baker has made several trips to Louisa Co. from CA to pursue info. To date, sources have been family lore, your site, the internet, and several visits to the LVA in Richmond where I was able to go through Edna Harris Bushnell's "Terry Records of Virginia." Elizabeth Terry's parents were Overton (b. 28 Feb-bapt. 9 Apr1787, both in Louisa Co.) and Sarah Garnett Terry who were married in Orange Co. on 29 Mar 1808. We have been unable to find anything about Sarah Garnett. ??Has anybody heard of Sarah Garnett or any other Garnetts? The 1850 Louisa Co. census shows 4 young Garnett children residing in the William Carpenter home. I have wondered if William was their grandfather and if they could be related to Sarah Garnett Terry. We have not had any success finding any Garnett family for Sarah. I may be reading too much into the situation to wonder if the Wise family also living in the (1850) Carpenter home might be related to a William Wise who was, in the late 1830's a bondsman or the like for the wedding of Angelina Terry and Matthew Grubbs (Angelina and Matthew are discussed further on here---she may have been the daughter of Emanuel Terry and Nancy Oakes). Overton and Sarah Terry had at least 4 children: William, Emanuel, Patsy (Martha) and Elizabeth. By 12 Feb 1816, both Overton and Sarah were deceased and on that date, per Louisa Co. Guardian Bonds Bk. (1769-1819), p. 490, the 4 children were named as orphans of Overton, deceased and the grandchildren of Emanuel Terry and Susan (we don't know who she was---perhaps a 2nd spouse). "The Guardian Bond: Emanuel Terry, John Brockman, Thomas Mann unto the Justices of Louisa Co., Va---Joseph Michie, Ralph Sandidge, and Frederick Harris. Witness: Thomas Baker." ??Does anybody know who that Thomas Baker may be? ??Might he be related to James O.? ??Does anybody know if any other persons in the previous paragraph might be related to Terrys or Bakers? We don't know what happened to Elizabeth's brother William. We know that her brother Emanuel and sister Patsy both married. Emanuel md. (1.) Fanny/Frances Hooper on 12 May, 1823 in Orange Co. and (2.) a Catherine in KY before 1850. He is found in the Lincoln Co., KY 1840 and 1850 censuses. He and Fanny had at least 2 children who went to KY with him. He had additional children with Catherine. He had passed away by the early 1850's. Other Terrys from Louisa Co. were also in Lincoln Co., KY at that time. ??Does anybody know anything about Emanuel and Fanny's children? ?? Does anyone know about Fanny/Frances Hooper or her family? Patsy married Oliver R. Humphrey on 13 Mar 1826 in Louisa Co.. The 1850 census finds him and children living in Louisa Co. without Patsy so we are assuming she was deceased by then. After that, he is found living next door to a James Terry. ??Does anybody know what happened to Oliver and their children? ??Who was Oliver's neighbor, James Terry and was James related to Emanuel Terry? ??Speaking of Terrys, does anybody know how/if Emanuel, b. 1756, is related to other Louisa Co. Terrys of his generation? Overton Terry had at least 2 siblings that we know of. One was Emanuel Terry who md. Nancy Oakes on 26 Nov, 1810 in Orange Co., VA. We think he and his family were living next door to his father Emanuel (b. 1756 and gfa of Elizabeth and her 3 sibs). We wonder if he and Nancy may be the parents of Angelina Terry who later md. Matthew Grubbs in Louisa Co.. Angelina's descendent Carolyn Miller is a source for the Grubbs line. ??Does anybody know anything about Angelina Terry Grubbs? Overton's other known sibling was Sarah Terry Jenkins Synan b. 3 Oct and bapt. 24 Dec (both in) 1790 in Louisa Co.. Sarah md. a (1.) John Jenkins in Orange Co. on 26 Nov, 1810, the same day that her brother Emanuel and Nancy Oakes were md. in Orange Co.. We don't know what happened to John Jenkins. ??Does anybody know anything about John Jenkins? On 9 Jan 1821, Sarah md. (2.)William Synan (some persons say Lyman/Lymon/Lynan/Lynon or Syman/Symon). But it is Synan with two "n's." Sarah and William had at least 5 children and he was a weaver who met an untimely death. One story is that he worked in a textile factory in Richmond and was killed when the train he rode back and forth to work in Richmond wrecked near Trouvillans (spel?) and another story is that he was walking home along the railroad track, and being hard of hearing, did not hear an approaching train and was struck and killed. Cousin Carolyn Miller tells me there is a Synan book available on Google. ??Has anybody heard of Sarah and William Synan and their children? The 1850 Louisa Co. census shows a widowed Sarah and her 4 youngest children, James, Elizabeth, Virginia and Edward, living in the household of her married daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Ed. M. Sumpter. Son William and family (last name spelled Sinan) were living in Fluvanna Co. where he is listed as a "woolcarder." We have been unable to locate Sarah in the 1860 census so she may have passed away by then. The 1860 Louisa Co. census, Northern Division, finds Edward Synan and wife Louisa C. (Ogg) living in the home of Thomas and Jane Dunn and Edward was a farmer and carpenter. ??Does anybody know if Edward or Louisa might have been related to the Dunns? On the same census page with Edward and Louisa are the households of Oliver Humphrey and James Terry, Oliver's being listed just before that of James. ??Does anybody know if any Humphreys or Terrys might be related to the Dunns? The Sumpter family, Synan daughter Martha and her husband Ed and family are now (1860) found in Boyle Co., KY and their surname is mistakenly spelled "Drimpton." James Synan is also living in KY and William is in VA in the textile business The 1870 Louisa Co. census finds son Edward H. Synan (spelled "Saunen") and his family living next door to Bushrod and Martha Baker. ??So, would any of you know if there might be a Baker connection with Bushrod since Edward Synon is a first cousin to my 3rd gt gmo Elizabeth Baker Terry? ??Was Bushrod Baker's wife Martha a Dunn? Thanks much for your time and patience. If any of you might have a connection to us, please let me know so we can share, work and learn together.
